Farewell to Matthias Boehning: Honoring His Leadership and Service

We express our sincere appreciation as we share the news that Matthias Boehning, Co-Director and Co-Founder of the WEA Sustainability Center, will be moving on to new opportunities beyond his current role with us.

Matthias Boehning at the United Nations Environment Programme’s 4th Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) in Nairobi, Kenya (March, 2019).

From the earliest days of the WEA Sustainability Center in Bonn, Matthias has demonstrated steadfast commitment, strategic insight, and a deep sense of vocation in shaping the Center’s work at the intersection of Christian faith and care of creation.

Matthias’ notable contributions include:

  • Co-founding and helping establish the WEA Sustainability Center in 2018, creating a new global platform for evangelical engagement in creation care and sustainable development.
  • Representing the WEA in key multilateral spaces, including the UN system as the WEA’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Bonn, and strengthening relationships with UNEP, UNFCC, UNCCD, and the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development to name just a few organizations.
  • Being appointed to the UN Multi-Faith Advisory Council to the Inter-Agency Task on Religion and Sustainable Development, a significant recognition of the WEA’s voice in global environmental and sustainability dialogue.
  • Co-leading major initiatives such as the “World Map of Prayers for Creation,” numerous webinars, consultations, and public forums that elevated creation care within global evangelical networks.
  • Participating in and helping guide engagement at major international gatherings, including UN Environment Assemblies, global climate COP processes, including the groundbreaking Faith Pavilions at COP28 and COP29, the UN Water Conference, and many other creation care and sustainability events.
  • Advancing the WEA’s theological and practical work through key publications—The Bible and the SDGs and the recently released Bible and SDGs Devotional—and through sustained partnerships with churches, NGOs, and development actors such as Tear Fund, Renew Our World, A Rocha, and Micah Global.

Matthias’ work has left a meaningful mark on the mission, visibility, and global engagement of the WEA Sustainability Center. His ability to bridge theological reflection with practical action has expanded our reach and deepened our impact.

As Matthias enters a new chapter, we extend our warmest thanks for his service and leadership. We pray God’s blessing on his next steps and look forward to future opportunities for collaboration.
